Statutory Authority

The Department of Transportation was established by an act of Congress on October 15, 1966. The Department’s first official day of operation was April 1, 1967.

Last week, @SecretaryPete witnessed first-hand the repair work on Memphis' Hernando de Soto Bridge. Here's what he saw:

This incredible feat is saving lives and helping end the pandemic!

From the people who built the Transcontinental Railroad to many of the workers keeping the traveling public safe, immigrants have powered American transportation for generations. During National Immigrant Heritage Month, we continue to recognize and honor those contributions.
